<image:title>Captain's Blog - Handwriting Camp Fine Motor Activities! - Ice Treasure Hunt</image:title>
<image:caption>While rescuing the frozen treasures, students will develop strong separation or the hand as they squeeze the handle of the spray bottle. This is important for things such as scissor use, and pencil grip. To de-ice the treasures, you will need to prepare a cup with small items such as gems, plastic animals, or beads. Fill with water and freeze the day before the activity. Have students use a small spray bottle of water to melt the frozen treasures. Make sure to do this in an area where things can get wet!</image:caption>

<image:title>Captain's Blog - Handwriting Camp Fine Motor Activities! - Tennis Ball Alien</image:title>
<image:caption>This fun activity combines development of separation of the hand, translation, and bilateral coordination. Separation of the hand is important for scissor use and pencil grip. Translation is used when manipulating small objects. Bilateral coordination is important for automatic stabilization of the paper with the non-dominant hand. For this activity, you will need a tennis ball with a slit cut for the mouth, googly eyes or pens (to decorate), and small objects to feed the alien such as pom poms, gems, or beads. With one hand students squeeze the ball to open the mouth, and with the other hand they put the items inside. Have them try switching hands too! Students can also palm a few of the items and move them to their fingertips without the other hand helping- this is translation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Captain's Blog - Handwriting Camp Fine Motor Activities! - Rubber Band Ball</image:title>
<image:caption>Rubber band balls are a great way to train intrinsic hand strength, as well as individuation of the fingers as students stretch against the tension of the rubber bands. For this activity you will need rubber bands in various sizes and thicknesses. You can use a small super bouncy ball to start it out, or a folded-up rubber band for more of a challenge!</image:caption>

<image:title>Captain's Blog - Handwriting Camp Fine Motor Activities! - Beady Baby</image:title>
<image:caption>Making a beady baby develops fine motor prehension as students hold tension on the lace with one hand while the other hand uses fingertip prehension to place the beads. This activity also develops sequencing for project completion as they follow the pattern of beads. To make a beady baby you will need lanyard cording, pony beads, and a key ring or clip. Here is a link to make an alien beady baby. Alien pattern here</image:caption>

<image:title>Captain's Blog - Handwriting Camp Fine Motor Activities! - Slime</image:title>
<image:caption>This activity develops sequencing for project completion as students follow step by step instructions to make their slime. To make slime, mix ¼ tsp borax into ½ cup water (for stickier slime use only 1/8 tsp). slowly mix the liquid into a bowl of ½ cup glue until it reaches the desired consistency. Use a pipette or dropper to add the liquid in for more of a challenge. Add food coloring and glitter to make your slime out of this world!</image:caption>

<image:title>Captain's Blog - Handwriting Camp Fine Motor Activities! - Putty Activites</image:title>
<image:caption>Doing these exercises with soft to medium stiffness putty is not only fun for students, but trains intrinsic hand strength to inform proper pencil grip. Finger Scissor Using a small amount of putty roll into a ball. Spread your fingers and place the ball in between two fingers. Squeeze the ball with your fingers until they touch. Repeat with all fingers and complete on both hands. Snake Roll putty into a snake. Then lay on the tabletop and using tip of thumb and index finger, pinch the snake into a crocodile tail. Make Your Name Hold the putty with both hands and roll into a ball. With the thumb and finger pads of your preferred hand, pinch off small pieces of putty by twisting and pinching the end of the ball. Roll small pieces into small pea shapes and then roll these into long sausages. Use the long sausages to make your name. (To increase the difficulty, ask students to make various letters, numbers and shapes using the putty). Hide and Seek Hide small objects (beads, gems) inside the putty and then try pulling and pinching them out. Pancake Spread Roll the putty into a ball using both hands. Place the ball on a table and flatten the ball to make a pancake by placing one hand flat on top of the other and arms straight. Pick up the pancake from the table and close one set of fingers together whilst extended. Place the pancake over the top of fingers and thumb and open them out as far as you can. Volcano Once putty is in a pancake, lay flat and draw the edges of the pancake upward into a volcano. Doughnut Stretch Roll putty into a ball using both hands. Roll the ball in to a snake. Squish ends together to form a donut. Place putty loop around fingers. Stretch loop by opening at large knuckles only. Keep the thumb still and finger straight. Complete with both hands. To increase the resistance, make the donut thicker or use a higher resistance putty. Students can also try making different animals out of the putty!</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Us - What is Occupational Therapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>“Occupational Therapy is a health, wellness, and rehabilitation profession which supports individuals with varying degrees of physical, socio-emotional, or cognitive impairments. Occupational Therapy helps clients regain, develop, and build skills that are essential for independent functioning, health, and well-being. Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants focus on helping children thrive in the “occupation” of childhood-learning, playing, and growing. Occupational Therapists help students develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed and be independent despite learning or developmental disabilities, or behavioral problems.” *Information taken from American Occupational Therapy Association Webpage</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Us - What is Sensory Integration?</image:title>
<image:caption>As defined by Dr. Jean Ayres in her book, Sensory Integration and the Child: “Sensory integration is the organization of sensory input for use. The “use” may be a perception of the body or of the world, an adaptive response, a learning process, or the development of some neural function. Through sensory integration, the many parts of the nervous system work together so that a person can interact with the environment effectively and experience appropriate satisfaction. (Sensory Integration and the Child, page 5) Sensory Integration is an unconscious process of the brain that gives us meaning to what is experienced. It allows us to act or respond to a situation we experience in a purposeful manner. It forms an underlying foundation for academic learning and social behavior (Sensory Integration and the Child, pg. 5) Ayres, J.A. (2005) Sensory Integration and the Child: Understanding Hidden Sensory Challenges. Western Psychological Services. Page 5.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Meet the Crew - Cherie Francis-Boegeman OTR/L</image:title>
<image:caption>Owner/ Occupational Therapist SIPT Certified, NDT Certified Cherie has been an occupational therapist for over 30 years in a variety of settings. Twenty of those years have been specializing in pediatrics. Cherie was a rehabilitation manager at Children’s Hospital of Orange County for 7 years. When productivity demands moved her into carrying a caseload, her original passion for sensory integrative therapeutic intervention was re-ignited. Cherie pursued her Sensory Integrative and Praxis Test certification (The Gold Standard for Sensory Integrative Therapy) and opened the LaunchPad Therapy for Kids with Barbara McCrory. Cherie assumed full ownership of the LaunchPad when Barb retired. In addition to being SIPT certified. Cherie is certified in Neurodevelopmental Treatment and has had extensive training in Masgutova Neuro-Sensory-Motor and Reflex Integration. The LaunchPad was a field testing site for the EASI (Evaluation in Ayres Sensory Integration® the next generation of the SIPT). She works closely with local school districts and private schools to support clients in being successful in the classroom. Cherie loves sensory integration and identifies well with her clients. She grew up a “Rambunctious” child and though undiagnosed at the time most likely had sensory integrative issues. She considers herself as a child not “Bad” but rather “Misunderstood”. She has a huge heart for the tricky kids and enjoys analyzing test results to figure out each child in order to help them “Soar” in their occupational roles of family member, student and playmate. Cherie is fortunate her husband and best friend, Steve, enjoys being the CFO and CIO to the LaunchPad as his night job. The growth of the LaunchPad would not have been possible without Steve. Together they are blending a family of her two adult children, Kaya and Khalid. She enjoys travelling and camping. She also is cofounder of the FREE To Love Again Divorce Recovery Ministry. <image:title>Meet the Crew - Jessica MOT, OTR/L</image:title>
<image:caption>Occupational Therapist As an occupational therapist at The Launchpad, Jessica brings a background in sociology and early childhood intervention, along with a passion for helping young children with developmental challenges. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from California State University, Fullerton, and spent over five years working as a behavioral therapist in homes with children aged 0–3. During this time, she witnessed how profoundly sensory processing challenges could affect behavior and development. Inspired by the potential of occupational therapy, she began volunteering at a hippotherapy center, where she supported therapists working with children facing both physical and sensory challenges. She also began volunteering at The Launchpad, where her professional journey truly took shape. Jessica later earned her Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Stanbridge University. Her first fieldwork rotation at The Launchpad sparked her passion for sensory integration. A second rotation at Life College, a community-based program for adults with disabilities, broadened her understanding of life skills, inclusion, and meaningful daily engagement. Jessica’s professional path also became deeply personal when she recognized sensory processing challenges in her own child. Through occupational therapy and hippotherapy, she witnessed firsthand the powerful impact of sensory integration—both in the clinic and in the growth and confidence of her own child. This experience strengthened her dedication to supporting other families navigating similar journeys. Jessica is currently pursuing advanced training and certification in Ayres Sensory Integration through CLASI to ensure the highest standard of care. In addition to her role at the private clinic, Jessica also serves as an occupational therapist in the Laguna Beach School District, where she has developed a strong understanding of the IEP and IEE processes and how to effectively advocate for children in the school system.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Meet the Crew - Madison, OTR/L</image:title>
<image:caption>Occupational Therapist Madison is the newest member of The LaunchPad Crew! She earned her Bachelor of Science in Child Development from California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo and completed her Master of Science in Occupational Therapy at Stanbridge University. During her graduate studies, she completed published master’s thesis titled Tying School-Based Occupational Therapy to Common Core Standards, focusing on the integration of academic standards and OT goals to support functional performance in the classroom. Before entering the OT field, she spent two years as a full-inclusion preschool teacher, supporting children with a wide range of abilities in collaborative classroom environments. She also spent seven summers working at Camp James in Newport, which strengthened her skills in play-based engagement and behavior support. Her passion for sensory integration sparked while volunteering at Centerpointe for Children under Dr. Aja Roley, where she learned and witnessed the power of sensory-informed interventions. As a fieldwork student, Madison was able to complete her first rotation at an adult rehabilitation facility with an emphasis on hand therapy and neurological rehabilitation. Her second fieldwork rotation at a pediatric clinic was by far her favorite. There she was able to help children of all ages gain the skills necessary to become more independent and functional in their everyday lives. Outside of work, she serves as a leader for a high school Girl Scout troop, mentoring teens through collaborative projects and leadership development. In her free time, Madison enjoys going to Disneyland, discovering new places (near and far), and spending quality time with friends and family.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Meet the Crew - Stacey, COTA/L</image:title>
<image:caption>Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, Student in the Masters of Reading and Literacy program at Cal State Fullerton. Stacey Lennon had her early beginnings in hand therapy where she really enjoyed constructing thermoplastic splints. She graduated from the Santa Ana College OTA Program in 2000, and pursued her career at Children’s Hospital Orange County where she met Cherie Francis, her supervisor. At CHOC, she had the opportunity to be trained by many accomplished therapists and developed a diverse skillset. She participated in the in-patient feeding program at it’s foundation, was trained in Neurodevelopmental Treatment, Sensory Integration, CranioSacral/Myofascial Release, vision and hearing in sensory integration, inpatient care in both the pediatric and oncology intensive care units. In 2002 she was presented with an award from the CHOC foundation in appreciation her dedication and extraordinary care given to the children at CHOC. She became a senior COTA with a special interest in Sensory Integration and was pursuing additional training in the integration of the vestibular, auditory and visual systems when she left in 2005 to be a stay-at-home mom. She developed a special interest in reading when she pulled her eldest son out of school in second grade when he began struggling with reading and writing and received no effective interventions. Determined not to let her son struggle with learning, the way she had struggled, she passionately pursued different reading interventions. Though the programs helped, they were scripted and used many compensatory strategies, without addressing the individual underlying sensory issues. She became a homeschool mom of her 3 children, eventually joining Classical Conversations, becoming a foundations and grammar tutor and eventually director where she led groups of 12 students in an integrative approach to grammar, research, exposition, debate, reasoning and logic (mathematics) for the last 9 years. She graduated from a 1.5 year classical cohort program and pursued trainings in the Lost Tools of Writing. Upon her eldest son’s high school graduation, she entered the Occupational Studies Program at Santa Ana College and graduated with a B.S. She began to develop a renewed interest on the effects of precise vestibular activation, the audio and visual systems and their relationship to learning, particularly reading. She is passionate about advocating for Occupational Therapy Practitioners to broaden their area of practice from focusing on writing, to also encompass reading, and bring occupational justice to the 1 in 5 children who suffer from some form of dyslexia. She is excited to join the Launchpad family and be reunited with Cherie after all of these years. She is currently taking classes in Sensory Integration from CLASI and pursuing her Masters in Literacy and Reading Education, with the hopes of developing a sensory integrative approach to reading During her free time, Stacey enjoys gardening, paddle boarding, learning, and spending time with her husband, kids, and grandkids.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Every day at the LaunchPad provides opportunities to learn and grow my clinical knowledge, particularly in the realm of Sensory Integration, all while having fun and playing all day. There is so much room to be creative when treating and it’s so rewarding to see how much the kids enjoy coming here for OT!” - Shannon 2024 “What I love about working at The LaunchPad is our focus on child-centered, therapeutic play that fosters sensory processing and supports success in daily activities. The close, collaborative relationships we build with kiddos and their families are both meaningful and holistic! Seeing their growth and progress is truly rewarding.” - Edee 2025</image:caption>
